A variety of different writing exercises are given to sharpen your eye, wake up your imagination and alert you to the rules of writing. During the week, several different forms - the essay, short story, fable and a dialogue-based scene based upon a photograph - will be introduced and explored at length.
Few writers can produce a polished, full-length work in a ten day period. Instead, the goal is to help you find (or rediscover) your writing voice, raise your confidence level and give you the kind of creative fuel that will burn well beyond our time together. If the number of Nightwriters who have gone on to be published after leaving is any indication then that goal is attainable.
Writers need to feel as if they have all the time in the world. We try to create that illusion by not adding to many extra curricular activities. But every year more and more local events complete for our attention. During the week we will make at least one trip to Siena. With its cobblestone streets, intimate restaurants, balconies hung with flowers and shops full of bread, chocolate, wine and cheese, Siena is easy to love and hard to leave.
